It’s Electrifying!

What we’ve (really just the handy husband, I’m totally the cheerleader in this case) have done electrically in the camper to make us able to work/live full time without running a generator all day… As I sit here typing this listening to our neighbors’ dueling generators at almost 11 pm at night… 🙄

First thing’s first, make a plan of what you want your system to accomplish and do the research. For us it was important to have a good battery bank, but also to be able to run the A/C while not hooked up to power if we absolutely had to for the pet‘s health as we will be heading towards the hotter climates this fall. We chose Victron because of known quality and warranty. We are not affiliated with Victron nor paid for this post. (Hey Victron if you’re reading this we’d be happy to consider it though 😉).

The reason we need batteries
The reason we need A/C

Our jump off point; our camper came with two led acid batteries, a 210 watt flexible but fixed solar panel mounted to the roof, a 75 v smart solar charger, an “intelligent” converter, and a 1200 watt inverter. By our calculations we would have been able to make it through the end of a work day before needing to run the generator in the evening to charge. And we definitely wouldn’t be able to run the air conditioner unless plugged in or on generator the entire time.

Knowing all that, we (he 😂) set out to do some mods. Some of the parts we chose were for space (we don’t have much of it). But mostly we found components that would do what we wanted, did some exact measuring, and a bit of rearranging to make sure they’d fit. In some cases we had to sacrifice a little; like where we originally bought six of the Renogy batteries but could only fit five in the camper no matter how hard we tried, so it ended up going to the in-laws to support their rv’ing habits.

Into the thick of it…

The hands on part of this adventure began with batteries. We chose Renogy because they were cost effective lithium batteries with decent reviews. Of the six we purchased, two have internal heating components because they go in the compartment facing the outside, and Lithium won’t charge in colder temperatures. Along with replacing the two old batteries and adding the three additional batteries we upgraded the wiring to 3/0 wire (this means much bigger wire for us non electric folks).

To monitor the batteries charge and discharge we added the SmartShunt. Giving an accurate SOC (state of charge).

After the SmartShunt we added the DC-DC charger to be able to charge those batteries while driving. We designed our setup to be mobile (no park sitting for months) and will cover a lot of ground so having the ability to use the truck to charge while driving is a huge plus. Our truck came with the plow and tow package so it already had the heavy duty second alternator installed which was a bonus.

Once we had those additions/upgrades we knew the complexity of the system was going to continue to grow so it was natural to want visibility into it, especially since we’ll be so reliant on it, so we installed the Cerbo for monitoring and data logging.

The next upgrade and major component (including size; we had to rearrange some things for this one) was to replace the inverter and converter with the multi plus sine wave inverter charger combo. Simply put, the converter side charges the lithium batteries, and the inverter side turns the stored power from DC to AC power so we can use normal plugs for electronics. Side note, we did leave the existing converter in the electrical compartment just in case, it’s just not hooked up.

As our system started to take shape we decided to upgrade the monitor on the inside of the camper to this Victron touch screen display unit to tie everything together where we can control and monitor the system visually. The hubs has apps on his phone, and even created a cool iPhone widget so he can see a lot of this on his phone, but having something inside where we can just press the screen to turn the inverter on or off, or see how things are flowing is nice.

Coming in on the final stretch after much thought (and learning that the fixed solar panel on the roof wasn’t as efficient as we hoped because it curves with the roof and can’t move with the sun), we decided to add some more solar capability. Think Tim the Tool Man Tayler “Aurgh aurgh aurgh More Power”. We decided to go with portable solar panels 1) to be able to chase the sun, and 2) to allow us to use the space on the roof for our roof racks (i.e. our inflatable standup paddle boards and fishing gear that I was really thankful we could find space for). I can’t say they are small, but we have been cranking about 450 watt solar input when the whole system is set up and the sun is shining so in this case finding a space for them is worth it. Instead of replacing the existing solar charger we ended up just adding another one out of ease.

Fixed solar panel missing the sun…

Last but not least, to complete the process and ensure the system was able to do what we set out for it to do, we installed a smart start (soft start) addition to our air conditioner so it doesn’t overload the inverter when it starts up. And then a want and not need, but to make it easier on us we also installed a digital thermostat.

Of course there were a few bus bars, a couple breakers, and a couple inline fuses added into this whole thing along the way but that is super into the weeds. We could provide that info if you really want it, just reach out. Also to note we upgraded all the wire to 6ga wire everywhere that wasn’t the 3/0 battery wire just to be on the safe side. Calculations were done and all the wiring meets the minimum draw requirements for the electrical system.

I guess the final “upgrades” for real this time, really just an honorable mention, is the addition of temperature sensors and propane tank sensors that tie into the monitoring system to give us a complete picture of our camper. The temperature sensors were handy this winter when we were camping in negative temps (this four season camper is exactly what it says it is, we had no problems staying warm in -10 degrees with 30 mile an hour winds), and going forward we have high heat alarms set for pet health. The propane sensors are just because we are creatures of comfort and now we don’t have to guess or shake the tank to know when we need propane.

In our defense we were left unsupervised…

If you made it this far, Thanks for reading. We’d be remiss if we didn’t say that even though he’s amazing he is not a licensed professional so we urge you to do your research and consult with someone who is if you plan on taking on a full system overhaul. We just hope our journey helps someone out there who was looking for more information. Though, I could see where you might be thinking there’s no way all of this was crammed in that camper, but I assure you it is. Maybe this smart hubby of mine is actually a magician and under the steps and seats of this camper is actually his own version of a Mary Poppins bag.

Begin… Again…

Around 10 months ago I sat here and wrote about all the changes in our life we’ve seen. Sure I may have said I was going to write more… But let’s not get picky over details…. 😂. Now I sit here in the midst of selling everything (and I almost mean it literally. If it isn’t something completely irreplaceable and/or doesn’t fit in our 10×10 storage, it’s gone), and think back to the last year where about this time we were on the road to drive to Oregon and back, with Butthole Kitty in tow, to pick up our new camper.

During that adventure we reminisced of the past, talked about life was, and speculated about what it would look like in a year.

Well one thing is for sure, we have said for the last four years our plan was to go adventure as soon as the youngest graduated and we have stayed true to our vision. So here we are packing up, selling nearly everything, and preparing to live full time in our truck camper.

I’ll just begin this part by saying this isn’t easy nor pretty. We’ve been living in a complete state of disarray for months now. Trying to part with things we once thought were very important but realizing it won’t fit in the camper nor will it be worth keeping in storage until we eventually settle somewhere is a whole new level of self discovery. Not to mention having a yard sale for two days unlocked a whole new personal level of hell. The Nalgene bottle with screwdrivers helped but it was not enough. I do feel that it’s a right of passage though, and we had to walk through the proverbial coals to move on to our next step.

So now you can honestly say you’ve been here with us from the beginning. Whatever that gets ya!

A quick recap of the last year… We love our camper. Spent lots of time in it perfecting what we need and what we don’t. We designed and had a special truck bed built from a local fab guy. Returned to the office and got permission to work remote. Finished out our last year on the Football Booster Club. And to top it all off we decided we needed more to keep us on our toes, so we got a puppy. A wirehaired pointing griffon named Briggs.

That leads to the next step, and a whole new beginning. We will be full time in the truck camper at the end of the month (May). More to come. Stay tuned!

New rig… who dis?!

So here’s the deal. We already know I’m bad at consistent blogging. And it sounds silly to say it, or write it in this case, but blogging is harder than one would think. The challenge with blogging is being vulnerable while trying to put life into legible witty words.

Pretty epic Aurora shows this winter.

Mostly for me its the time. I hardly have enough time to get my absolutely required responsibility stuff done… like my full time plus plus job that pays the bills (🙄 < cough-lame-cough >). Add on what feels like a full time job of Booster Club membership (🤦🏼‍♀️ yes we both have been actively sucked in to the volunteer vortex). This creates the need to get out and camp/adventure to shake off all the crap from the aforementioned responsibilities as much as possible.

Booster Duty… Sidelines on a windy Soldotna day.
Sometimes the view makes the work less painful.

A lot has changed since the last time I wrote… we made it through that winter, we lost Ramsey, moved houses, went from a bumper pull to a 5th wheel trailer, an Alaskan summer, a major surgery, a whole other winter (less cold but much more snow), found a home for MoFo, and a trip to Oregon and back in the truck which leads us to our current situation: New Rig, who Dis?!

It’s funny, not like ha ha funny, but more like strange peculiar funny how life happens; not how we want it to, but how it’s supposed to… so here we are. We’ve completely re-evaluated our plan. We sold the 5th wheel, signed our lease for 13 more months, and bought into the next phase in our five year plan.

Meet Coddiwomple. Or Sherlock the 2022 Nu-Camp Cirrus 820 placed happily on Bruce (Dr Watson) a ruby red F-250 super duty. Naming is very important but we haven’t stuck with one yet. But we are in love. This camper is just the right everything. Looking forward to the next adventures.

And in the interest of the blog namesake, here’s just some wholesome Butthole Kitty content.

Thank you for reading. If you don’t already do so, I’m much more of a regular poster on our socials so be sure to check us out there!

Nothing says love like the indifference of a cat !😹 Print, cut, and share these probably too painfully realistic valentines! We love our cats even when they mostly tolerate us!

The latest… (besides the exciting book release)

Spoiler alert… it’s not as exciting as the book release.

The weather has been pretty rough around here this season. I know we live in Alaska but we chose to live somewhere in Alaska that isn’t supposed to get THAT cold.

We’ve been seeing a lot of negative temps and intense weather patterns that have hampered our winter adventures some.

Though we’ve done what we can to prepare for the cold…

(Warm heads, warm hearts right?!😺)

Can confirm, there’s still not any interest in becoming a snow cat. 😹

Is it summer yet?!

And even though winter only officially just started you can bet we are already getting ready for what I call; Glamping Adventure Season (Our favorite time of the year; the time from thaw until the next freezing season and when all the best adventuring happens)!

Alaska check: there are things called snow rakes that come with 20 ft or so long poles to pull snow off roofs and whatever else that is tall that may need it, because snow is heavy and can cause a roof or trailer collapse.

Alaska Pro Tip: Keeping the snow cleared around the trailer all winter makes for earlier use in the season because we don’t have to wait for all the ice to thaw around it to get it out.

Book Sales!

Other than all this cold and snow, and some holiday insanity, there have been some decent book sales… thank you for that!

Last but not least… Happy New Year Y’all!

2021 was a year of many things, but we are pretty glad it’s over, and are really looking forward to the new year and all it will bring!

What’s your New Years’ Resolution?

This just in… I’m bad at Blogging

Ok, it’s obviously not a surprise, and in my defense the world is going crazy. It’s not just me!

I’m super stupid busy at work (I’d love to say I draw butts for a living but sadly I have a day job). The holidays always add a spectacular level of drama and complications. Book sales have been surprisingly decent (I’m not complaining but did not anticipate it but it’s taken a bit of grind). There’s also the matter of where I decided to drop book two right in the middle of all this… and I just need to face it, a blog takes time and brain power that I just didn’t have the bandwidth (figuratively and literally) for.

HOWEVER, ALL THAT LEADS ME TO…

The Adventures of Butthole Kitty: in Alaska (book two) is NOW AVAILABLE in paperback and ebook on Apple Books.

From Cover to Cover… An Alaskan adventure.

The gist: Butthole Kitty tells Fartbox Dog who he would meet, and what he would do if he went on adventures in Alaska.

Pretty exciting stuff all in all.

This book has a lot more color, and more visually stimulating pages than book one. Is that my fancy way of saying I got a bit more creative, and went a bit more detailed in my drawings? Yes it is.

I really am pleased with how the illustrations came out. If you’ve never done this before, drawing on an ipad and then sending to print can have a whole different look. We had to play with the print color percentage a little and it worked out well.

I know I shouldn’t play favorites but I just love this book. Mostly because it has fun animal butts of our favorite alaskan animals that we love to see while adventuring in some of our favorite places around the state. 😻

I will try to do better at this blog thing!

ANNOUNCEMENT: BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE!

Well I missed the mark announcing it on here… you know, the blog that is supposed to be updated with all the latest happenings… basically I am woefully unprepared for this entire venture. But I’ve been plugging along to make it work. Even already shipped a few books to non-friends or family which is a win in my book <Badum Tiss>.

A couple things I’ve learned

  • Shipping to or from Alaska is ridiculous. Cost, wait times, all of it.
  • Social media is a curse and a blessing.
  • Calling something finished to point of print is hard.
  • Publishing books i.e. putting yourself out there is even harder.

I never wanted to be an author, illustrator, whatever. I’ve always been a bit crafty, creative writing in school was my favorite and love to doodle but never took any of that seriously.

Shipping is the worst…

It’s hard for me to have to charge so much for shipping. $5.00?! It seems like so much. But honestly that barely covers the cost of it when including shipping supplies. I’ve toyed with charging more for the books and including shipping. Honestly the price would be about the same, but I’ve heard mixed reviews.

What do you think? If the price comes out the same does it make a difference how we market it? Would you rather pay more for the book and get “free” shipping or keep the book $9.99 plus shipping. 🤔

Oh the Socials…

Social media is free (mostly) marketing. Sure you can pay some to Boost posts and have advertisements, but ultimately the harder you hustle the more benefits you get.

The catch, it’s a lot of work. Like for real. It’s not just posting something here or there and it works… there are appropriate times, algorithms, hashtags, tricks and hacks that make it all come together. It takes a lot of work to be viral or trending on social media. Thank goodness for scheduled posts.

I guess this is why people have interns… Any takers? Would they be Butthole Interns?

Ok, print this one, wait ok, this one…

Man, that was super hard to do! Accepting that the book is done and ready for print. I still even worry that I didn’t do enough. I worry that I should have made some more changes and added more, or tweaked other things. But really that could go on forever. I had to just do it. Worst case scenario that’s why there are versions.

I did struggle with which books to print when. It all came down to capital. I was trying not to get ahead of myself. I really need to sell The Adventures of Butthole Kitty: Book One so I can print The Adventures of Butthole Kitty: in Alaska (book two). And let me tell you I really am excited about Book Two!

Who’s ready for book two?! 🙋🏼‍♀️

Am I publishing or baring my soul…

I think this will be a topic I reference many times. It is scary to publish something; 1) because you have to accept it is complete and hand it over, and 2) because you are putting yourself out there.

There’s not a lot of solid trustworthy information about self publishing. There’s a lot of companies who say they will help you if you give them money… So wading through the process is hard enough, but one thing is for certain, there will be negative comments. There will be people who don’t agree or like your work. I mean the title alone of mine has some people turning up their noses. If nothing else I can say do it anyway. I know it’s scary, but take that leap and put that book out there and see what happens.

Honestly I don’t entirely know how to get through this one yet. It’s still early. I’m sure I’m going to get some scathing reviews and I’ll have to deal with them when they come. Any tips on how to handle this besides getting in the fetal position under the desk sucking my thumb?

Anywho… I’ll wrap this up

Long story short,

Want to carve your very own Butthole Kitty Pumpkin?

<print me> Butthole Kitty pumpkin carving template.

Instructions: Print and Carve

– Print out the template. (Tip: If your template is too big you can always adjust the size in your printer settings zoom mode to have it print smaller to fit your pumpkin)

– Tape your template to your pumpkin; at this point your pumpkin should already be hollowed and ready for carving.

– Use a pumpkin carving tool (one with the pointed edge) and start poking holes to outline your design.

– After you have completed poking all the holes around your design, use the knife like pumpkin carving tool to start making your cuts around the poked holes. (Tip: those holes help keep your cuts in line with your design)

Coming Soon…

Final print approval today! Book One will be available in paperback form next week. It’s pretty surreal.

From start to finish this book has been quite the adventure in itself. I’m really excited to see my hard work in hand and almost available to the masses!

Let’s face it, cats can be buttholes. But we still love them. If you are a cat fan, have a cat, have cat sat for someone, or even have a friend who has a cat that shares their silly stories, there is a chance you’d get a kick out of this book.

Look out world, Butthole Kitty is coming!

The Cat’s Out of the Bag

I. Did. It. I wrote a book… or two… OK I’m even on the third one so far.

It all started while doodling to stay focused during meetings. Lots and lots of meetings. I started drawing something that was close to my heart… Or should I say in my face <eye roll emoji> Haha.

Once I had a handful of drawings a story began to emerge and a concept was formed. Put it all together and here we have the makings of a series.

The Adventures of Butthole Kitty: Book One took shape based on actual activities of our fluffy butthole kitty. The completely spoiled indoor cat who thinks he wants to go outside.
